This is a single incidence of a shark having its fins cut off and the still living remainder of it being pushed back into the water to die, unable to swim, unable to breathe, a slow agonising death. What most people dont know or turn a blind eye to is that Australia has a state sponsored shark fin industry whereby licensed shark fisherman are allowed to fin sharks and export to the Chinese market at nearly 1000 dollars per kilogram and feed that countrys lust for a bowl of soup that is a status symbol only and has zero nutritional benefit. The State Fisheries Departments legitimize this absolutely destructive industry by making the shark fisherman bring back and utilize the remaining trunk of the shark. The remains of the shark get sold to local fish and chip shops as a methylmercury laden cheap option to the more sustainable, yet, more expensive fish options or to be processed into pet food and chews and snake oil homeopathics such as shark cartilage supplements. 90 percent of shark and ray populations worldwide have been fished out of existence for the shark fin soup trade, Australia is complicit in this cruel environmental travesty as one of the top 15 suppliers of shark fin to China. Is money more important than a healthy planet? Without sharks, oceans die, we die. #finfree
