Crowding Out – Cleanse Day #2 How are you feeling after day one? Today is about making smarter food choices. Let’s deconstruct your cravings for meat. Ask yourself: Why do I always feel that I should add grilled chicken to my salads? What drives me to crave sizzling bacon with my breakfast? Before you answer with “it satisfies cravings; it keeps me full; it completes my meal,” here’s a thought: maybe you’re just hungry for other nutrient-packed foods like vegetables, fruit, nuts, and beans? Whether you’re an occasional fish eater or full-fledged meat devotee, you can easily replace some of your protein staples with vegetarian alternatives. If you’re worried about missing out on vital nutrients, don’t panic. Kale, for example, trumps red meat in the iron stakes, while many of your favorite nuts, seeds, and grains (like quinoa!) pack a major protein punch. It may sound crazy, but in time you’ll find that by adding more plant-based foods, you automatically crowd out meat without feeling deprived. TRY THIS EXERCISE Flip through a magazine or browse online for three new dinner recipes. If you rarely eat pork or beef and tend to stick to lean meat and fish, opt for a meal with lots of beans and legumes. If you consider a meal to be nothing without a succulent steak, choose chicken or turkey instead. Extra brownie points if you really want to step out of your comfort zone and try a non-meat protein like tofu or tempeh! If you still feel you’re missing out, add an extra protein-packed side to your meal. Try these delicious options: sprouts, spinach, broccoli, artichokes, bean salad, pumpkin seeds, and flax seeds. Remember, you don’t have to go full vegetarian right away! Small, slow changes are key. I encourage you to be mindful of the concept of crowding out as you move forward. By simply eating more whole foods from plants, you naturally reduce your consumption of meat. All the best! Blessings, Cheryl
