This is a troublesome definition to a troubling tendency i have seen all too often. There are many examples of it, you yourself could name (but probably believe it is normal). One version of it is another word: the bottom line. Our lawmakers saw fit to insist, by law, that if a board or corporation did not make a profit, they could and should be removed and replaced by those who would. This legal requirement did not include or require that long term costs of short term solutions even be considered. An excellent and well-known example of this kind of short-sightedness was the Ford Pinto. It was known by Ford corporate execs that a $5 strap and bolt added to the fuel tank assembly would make their vehicle more safe in the event of a collision; less risk of an explosion or fire. Because this would lessen their profit, they elected to leave it out. This resulted in damage claims and wrongful death claims that Ford decided to just go ahead and pay, since THESE were still less costly than a recall and retrofit to correct the problem. Were it not for some of these lawsuits, we would STILL not know how shortsighted those executives were. Waiting until AFTER the train-wreck has happened is a time-honored strategy in the legal system we live by. Drug-testing the engineer of a train came about AFTER a devastating train wreck happened. The next two years in Washington DC are a slow motion train wreck we will get to watch. The publicans did not get a veto-proof majority in the legislature. merriam-webster/dictionary/shortsighted
