This is a very early photograph of the Market Place - maybe as early as 1860s-1870s. The Fleece Inn is immediately behind the pump, to right Hurst (Chemist) at Waterloo House, and then Longbottom (Draper and Hosier) next door. There is a very Victorian-looking gentleman sitting against the lamp post and ladies in crinolines (which may fix the dating) around what I believe is a scissor and knife grinding machine. Hurst is in business there in the 1860s and I have one directory entry for Barnard Longbottom in 1872. There is also a Barnard Longbottom as mayor in 1891 and 1893. This may be the same man in retirement or a son.
