This is a video of some of the highlights of a visit to the Lakawana Coal Mine tour in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The mine is located in McDade Park in the Northeastern part of the state which has long been known as the coal region. Here, you’ll get a chance to “go down into history” as you descend 300 feet into the mine which first opened in 1860. This is an excellent tour during which you will learn of the dangers and working conditions faced by the workers, many of whom were teenagers - and some as young as seven years old. As noted on the statue in the park honoring the contribution of Anthracite Coal Miners; coal was the power that fueled the American industrial revolution, and led to the United States becoming the most powerful nation on earth. Our nation and its people owe a debt of gratitude to the anthracite coal miners who sacrifices enriched the lives of everyone. This is a very fun and interesting place to visit!
