This is an excellent article about how useless health insurance is - TopicsExpress

This is an excellent article about how useless health insurance is for most people. For example, at most, one year of being uninsured yields a loss of life expectancy of 16 healthy days of life. Also, The best evidence shows that the average morbidity benefit, or reduction of the incidence or severity of disease, associated with gaining health insurance coverage for one year would equal 3.7 to 6.8 days of healthy life. Images are from the article with the QR code added by me to identify the URL. Note how a small percentage of people are responsible for most health care costs. Since they were already covered pre Affordable Care Act if they were impoverished by their illness by Medicaid the main purpose of the ACA is to allow a small minority of really sick people to force other people to help them maintain their homes, cars, boats, investments, etc. by avoiding paying their medical bills using their resources. Ill leave it to the philosophers as to whether this is a good reason to force everyone to buy overpriced health insurance but will point out that I believe there will be way more people who will never acquire much assets due to the costs of ACA so ultimately we will have more impoverished people due to trying to save a low percentage of financially well off people today from becoming impoverished. Of interest a major claimed purpose of health insurance is to protect against catastrophic medical bills that might financially devastate us. The article reports Not having insurance increases a person’s risk of filing for medical bankruptcy by only 189 per 100,000 (i.e., less than 0.2 percent). Note if you file for bankruptcy and some kind soul comes along and pays all your medical bills youd still have an 89% chance of needing to file for bankruptcy. Often hidden in the propaganda about medical insurance preventing bankruptcies is the people likely to be in serious debt over medical expenses are likely to be in serious debt over other expenses too.
