This is dedicated to the brown skinned souls who grew up navigating the tops of racial fences. For different pathological reasons, both sides of that fence hoped you would fall and fail. You were confounding. You were different. You didnt even want to, but your composition defied their easy expectations. In that narrow gauntlet between You aint like us and Youre not like the others, we eventually found ways to maneuver along that fence, didnt we? Even though you liked punk music. Even though you liked to read. Even though your friendships spanned the color spectrum. Even though your style was seldom in style. Even though --ahem-- You speak so well. You ultimately decided that your life was yours to design and not a profile to zip yourself into. Yes, its easy to be poetic now, but the teasing and taunts are vivid and still visceral to me, too, even after all these years.
