This is excellent book on history of Muslim Arab Women. Published long ago (1992) and for that matter I believe does not adequately represent the significant and historical changes of more than past twenty years or so. She presents the history of Muslim Women and women’s role in Middle Eastern history. A well-researched book written with high scholarship and supported with strong historical evidence. As an Iranian who has read the English edition I notice that her book focuses on Arab Women, specifically on Egypt with a good deal of attention paid to the impact of colonialism, how Muslim (Egyptians and other Arab Muslims) intellectuals and modern thinkers were influenced and impacted by the European Colonialism and Colonial Europe. I certainly would have liked to see more about pre and post-revolutionary Iranian women and their struggle for freedom and liberty. In this context the distinction between Shia’ and Sunny religious culture becomes an important part of the research focusing of “Muslim Women”. The title of the book is “Women and Gender in Islam” and the author’s concern with the plight of Middle Eastern (Muslim) women. Reference to Iran is briefly mentioned in only six pages in the entire book! Not including Iran , a very large and significant Middle Eastern country with a very different “Muslim” women population may be an indication of a misleading title for this book.
