This is going to be long. I was asked to share the speech on here - TopicsExpress

This is going to be long. I was asked to share the speech on here that I gave to the 5th grade graduation that I titled Why I dress funny. Feel free to share this with other parents from EBCS who werent able to attend todays Ceremony. When I was sitting at the coffee shop the other day, a student came up to me and said “Mr. Roberts, why do you dress funny?” I had to think about this for a minute. Then it occurred to me that this is what I should talk to you guys about. So today, I’d like to share a couple of those reasons with you. The first reason that I dress funny, is because it’s important how you show up in the world. For me, wearing a nice shirt and tie, even a pair of shoes that show that I mean business, help me tell who ever I’m about to meet that I take myself seriously, and am ready to work hard. Your first impression is always important, but there’s more to it than just that. How you show up is not just about what you are wearing. It’s about being a good child to your parents. It’s about being a good brother or sister. It’s especially important when you go to school. How you show up in school is about making sure that you’ve had a good night sleep, a good breakfast and are prepared to learn. How you show up is also about how you interact with others. In this building I see Eagle feathers that you’ve earned for being good citizens every where. It’s important to be a good community member. I’ve watched as you and your classmates have shown each other respect and compassion. I’ve seen you help one another out. Carry this sense of community with you wherever you go. Use it to support each other next year as you enter the middle school, and down the line when you enter the high school. The second reason I dress funny, is because this is who I am. You should all be confident in who you are. We’re all different and special in our own way. When you get to the middle school, your opportunities will be very different from your time here at East Bethel. There will be many groups and clubs, band and choir. There are a lot of exciting things to try. I encourage you all to try something that makes you a little nervous. If you like it, great. If you don’t, at least you know you gave it a shot. It is important that you learn to think for yourselves. People will ask you to do things that you may or may not want to do. You can say no. Nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to do. Well, except your parents, and teachers. Be brave, and show the world who you are, with Eagle Pride. Congratulations to you the East Bethel Community School Class of 2014
