This is insane. While New Zealand workers are losing their jobs faster than a sailor on shore leave goes through back pay, the National gubmint want to solve the – lets say it – artificially pumped-up housing crisis by importing steel-framed houses from China. Whos getting the backhander, I wonder? And what will it take to get rid of these bastards? Meanwhile, in other news, timber-framed school buildings constructed in the 1960s (a time of pretty high faux almost-socialism in NZ) have passed earthquake stress tests with flying colours. There is a crying skills shortage in various industries, our economy needs a kickstart, our building standards have slipped - the answer is right there in front of our noses. Use NZs timber resources to implement a new state housing scheme (rent to own and no ghettos please) alongside an invigorated apprenticeship programme to train professional tradespeople, and reimpose strict standards on all new builds - yes, even bring back actual building inspectors who go onsite to ensure that something as basic as the right grades of timber are being used.
