This is interesting as finding a water source on Mars is the crucial part for any future Mars colony. I think the water is underneath the ground. I think this water can be assessed without having to have a massive big mining operation (to begin with anyway) by sending drones down the huge caves on Mars which go down to the sub-terrain level naturally. Another core reason for finding water is with water, an atmosphere can be created by making a rudimentary mist, and then expanding the height and breadth of the pockets created is the challenge of any Mars colony. This phase can also be done in one of the many craters on the Mars surface, making a mini oxygen rich atmosphere within the crater and beginning the earthly life cycle. Put simply, they will be attempting to terra-form Mars by creating an atmosphere and do to this they need water.
