This is motivated by side arguments that came up during my last post. Who is your least favorite established master among great composers? The composer you choose should be a well known established master whose work is done often at churches. (I Would consider choosing a 20th century master such as Schoenberg a cop out due to the nature of his progressive harmonic material. Try to limit it to well know composers who with out a doubt would be played at a church service without much question from the congregation.) For me personally the choice is easy: Mendelssohn. I fully accept the fact that Mendelssohn is a musical genius of the highest order. His music balances romantic and classical elements with a level of grace and sophistication that is missing in most of his contemporaries. His orchestration is clear and attractive, his forms and structures sound....and yet....I find the vast majority of his material to be boring...I will play Mendelssohn if asked because he is an absolute master...but I will try to avoid it whenever possible. I am eager to read your posts.
