This is my cancer awareness-raising selfie, following nominations by Bern and Paul. The woman in the portrait is my mother Joan who would have been 83 today had she not died 21 years ago this week from cancer. The portrait is by the beautiful Monaghan artist, Mary Quinn, my cousin by marriage. Mary died of cancer, also at 62, just one year ago. These outstanding role-model women in my life were just seven years older than I am now when they died. Many women and men survive cancer, however, thanks to greater awareness and advances in medical research.
