This is probably a futile effort, but does anyone out there have experience with leech-keeping? Internet sources are all over the place, and Id appreciate a one-on-one expert opinion. I fear that one of my leeches is not long for this world. It looks like its mouth is damaged somehow. The distal part of its torso isnt flattening properly when it swims, its drawing back sharply when nudged with the fish-scoop, and it seemed to be having real trouble latching onto food. And while Im not heartbroken, per se... its not, after all, a cat, or a human... Im frustrated, at the least. Its not the first one Ive seen with these symptoms, Ive never been able to get one to recover, and I havent been able to determine the cause. I think they may be nibbling each other, but Im to the point of feeding them about 8 times as often as the most generous reference I saw and I dont think theyre terribly territorial creatures. Its possible that theyre damaged in handling, but Im pretty careful. Granted, I have no idea what the normal lifespan of a leech is. One source suggested it was one year, but said source also believed leeches didnt need to eat so youll pardon my skepticism. Still, the symptoms I see appear too suddenly for me to think its aging.
