This is regarding not only the ride in Pine Springs yesterday, but also the way HATVA guides there rides in general. Yesterday there was one guide at the front of the group and no more. There was no what if plan in place at all. No group meeting before the ride to discuss a strategy. The group became split up not knowing which direction the riders in front of them went. Many people were upset and confused. To correct the problem for the remaining abandon part of the group we formed our own group with much better leadership. Randall Jones was at the front and Gerry Crego was at the back. At every intersection we stopped to make sure we were all together as a result of a head count we made. THIS WAS ORGANIZED LEADERSHIP. The riders all remained calm, we all had fun and the day was saved. This is the way KATVA does it and it has proven to work well. Last year we went on a similar ride where as the group was again split up due to a lack of a game plan. When we finally found the other half of the group, a confrontation occurred between a rider and the leader. Yesterday that same leader said to that same rider, I dont want any shit from you this time. This leader obviously doesnt get the point. If HATVA continues to conduct rides in this manner, they will certainly lose interested participants. My proposal is not new. You have done it in the past and it works. At the beginning of each ride you gather everyone together and layout the plan. You have a leader at the front, one in the middle and one at the back. Everyone should have a mirror to watch that the person is still behind them. If you dont see that person, stop and wait. It eventually trickles all the way up to the front letting the front leader know there is a problem. Stop and wait at intersections to make sure the people behind you are all taking the same trail. None of this happened on yesterdays ride and thats why it was certain to have a negative outcome. If yesterdays guide sees nothing wrong in the way he leads a ride and wont listen to angry confused riders than you need a new leader. Just because you know the trails is a poor prerequisite to qualify as a trail guide. These rides can easily be made good again, after all we are out here to have fun! Thank you, John Vonk
