This is sad that its even a problem needed to be discussed in 2014. Ill never forget getting excited that my mom gave me a perm in the mid 60s, then being held up by other kids (we were probably 4th grade) calling me the n word, then chasing me to beat me up. This was in the Scottsdale School District, here in Arizona. I cried so hard that night, feeling betrayed for allowing my mom to do it. I thought it would be Shirley Temple cute, but instead, it meant hiding out in the bathroom for hours after school before I could run home. (The saddest part is that today, my older sister, has actually chided me for not being able agree with her racist views.) They never threw rocks at her everyday because of her fair skin color. Some people never get it and are in total denial of their heritage.
