This is something I posted on my boys page and thought it fitting to be posted here as well with a small edit. - Often I see on the different community pages I belong to people asking what is a heart rat. Honestly, if you dont know, you havent had one. It is that simple. My standard explanation is that it is sort of like having an inter-species soul-mate. A being that becomes such a part of you that it is difficult or impossible to distinguish where one ends and the other begins. Even that explanation pales in comparison to the real thing. It is like having a theoretical knowledge of an afterlife, yet never having experienced it. It is something that, no matter how much you think you get it, you dont until youve been there. Will everyone have a heart rat? Unfortunately I dont think so. Not to say that people dont love their rats and the rats love their humans, but a true heart rat is a bond that is quite rare. Every one of my boys over the years I have loved with all my heart and each ones journey to the bridge was terribly saddening and a bit of myself went with each one. The loss of a heart rat, however, is a suffocating, crushing experience. It is losing so much of yourself that it takes time to really reach an equilibrium again.
