This is such entitled, pretentious bullshit. Im completely behind musicians being paid (like for real), but frankly, money doesnt flow like wine at every instance when a musician is going to be performing music. Sometimes to get known, as a musician, you have take the hit financially (often more than) once in a while. Its your passion, at the end of the day, not theirs. If you care enough about it, and you want to put yourself out there and do what you can to be seen rather than paid, things will snowball and one day youll get a name for yourself as a musician who earned their stripes. Its easy to look at from a far away perspective and say doesnt it suck that bands dont get paid, and as much as i agree with that statement, it isnt as straight forward as that. Theres no use in pretending all promotors are hiding the money from you at the end of a show or whatever. You not being paid for your performance isnt your right to take £50+ off a person who probably lost money (or broke even) that night too. Like anything, its about financial balance. Its better to play shows and not get paid than just not playing shows because the person putting you on wont be able to pay for your living expenses. If you have that mentality than its veeery unlike youll ever get to the point where you will make money off your craft. Most bands/musicians dont start truly making money off their work until, like, their fifth year of being a band. And thats not counting all the money theyve put into it over the years. Money should be made to spend on things you care about, it isnt just there for you to pay a bill to somebody youd rather not pay. I thought everyone got this by now.
