This is the first time Ive seen this video but the message is the same. Its ironic that, in a country littered with yellow ribbons and commercial support the troops campaigns, this is a problem. Of course, service members are applauded and thanked when theyre in clean uniforms. But when they fall into a malignant state, when they need their country the most, their own citizens will walk over them. Let me share a story that Ive kept to myself until now. After running the Nashville Marathon in April, I was walking another two miles to my car. There was an older man in a wheel chair, without legs and only one eye. He was holding a water bottle and beckoning to passerbys. No one stopped. I took out my wallet and approached him, ready to give money. All he wanted, though, was for someone to help him tie his water bottle to his wheel chair because he was missing parts of his fingers in his right hand. I have never seen someone so grateful for so little. He wasnt a fake, either- everything he told me about his service with the 101st Airborne checked out. I wheeled him to a Subway and told him to order whatever he wanted. The employees looked repulsed and disgusted, as if I had defecated in the middle of the store. I kept him company for a little while but nothing I could have said would have remedied his situation. Thousands of people ran 26.2 miles that day- a demanding task. But none stopped to help a crippled soul tie his water bottle.
