This is the response I got from the PTA in regards to the escalator at Wellard Station. Dear Matthew Thank you for your comment. The escalators at Wellard Station have a design weakness with the handrail drive system, indeed 28 of our escalators have the same problem. We have upgraded the design and have been fitting this at Wellard. The escalator is due to be completed on 23rd August once all of the upgraded parts have been refitted. We will however need to work on the other escalator at Wellard and upgrade that as well as the other escalators with the same issue. We plan to do this once all the materials have been manufactured and I have reviewed the performance of the upgraded escalator at Wellard. This future works should be carried out quicker once done in a planned manner rather than reacting to failures with an estimated duration of 3 weeks per escalator.
