This is track number 6 on our new CD titled, First Press. “I Dont Know Why” Written by: Ralph Williams & Jermaine Layton I Dont Know Why like Wonderful Ears was inspired by the relationship between my wife, Louanne and me. It doesnt take a genius to know that I married way up and out of my league. Hence the song, I Dont Know Why. I still have no idea why she allowed me into her life, but I must say, it makes me happy. Like many of the songs I write, I lay down the basic tracks with piano, drums and my vocal. I hear so many things that I just cant seem to lay down on my own. So, once again I called on Jermaine to help me put and pull all of the pieces into a work that really sounds and feels like what I hear in my head. One of the things that I wanted in this song was a slight reggae feel, but more importantly I wanted it to have a happy kind of bounce to it. I also heard a transition out of that groove into a slight hip hop feel for a few measures. The trick in doing that was making the transition smoothly and seamlessly. Then I wanted the song to slip back to its original groove in such a way that it would feel natural. I think Jermaine really pulled that off. One of the things that Jermaine suggested was that I sing not only the lead part, but that I also sing all of the back-up parts. I thought, are you kidding me? Of course Jermaine persisted and he started coaching me through an additional 4 parts of harmony. After everything thing was done, I understood why he wanted me doing all of the voices. Yes, I could have gotten much better singers than me, and the harmonies would have been perfect. But, what Jermaine heard in his head was the match on my vocal imperfections lining up nicely with the lyrics to I Dont Know Why. I hope you enjoy this song, and I hope you feel an extra bounce in your step as you listen to it. Bottom Line: I hope it makes you happy.
