This just in - the conservative activists on the Supreme Court today continued their attack on voting rights by rejecting the findings of a lower court and affirming the right of authorities in Texas to impose what are widely considered the most restrictive voting laws in the nation. In Texas you can vote if you are in the military or are licensed to carry a weapon openly in the Post Office, but not if you are among the hundreds of thousands of disproportionately poor minorities who do not have a drivers license or a passport. The three women justices on the court dissented on the self-evident grounds that the laws are discriminatory and have been instituted for political purposes. The greatest threat to public confidence in elections in this case is the prospect of enforcing a purposefully discriminatory law, one that likely imposes an unconstitutional poll tax and risks denying the right to vote to hundreds of thousands of eligible voters, Justice Ginsburg wrote in dissent.
