This just in: “The voice of the adoptive families is crucially important to the passage of this bill. Gail Johnson Vaughan from Mission Focused Solutions California Association of Adoption Agencies (CAAA) and Mission Focused Solutions are requesting that adoptive families and supporters submit letters to the Assembly Speaker and Appropriations Committee Chair to prevent, AB 1790, the Adoption Competency Bill, a CAAA- and Mission Focused Solutions-sponsored bill from getting stuck in suspense. AB1790 will require that county mental health plans take steps to increase the pool of specialty mental health providers, who have specialized adoption training, to address the special clinical issues faced by adoptive children and their families. On May 23, 2014 the California Assembly Committee on Appropriations will hold a hearing where AB 1790 will most likely head to the “suspense” file based on the suggestion of a consultant who gave the bill a price tag of $1.4 million. HOW CAN YOU HELP? The CAAA and Mission Focused Solutions are asking that adoptive families write letters of support to prevent the bill from going into suspension. Please don’t feel like you need to do something original or up to your usual articulate brilliance. You may use the templates found here (email [email protected] and I will send you the pdf) for both the Appropriations Committee Chair and the new Speaker of the State Assembly; there are also instructions to make it easy. While the hearing is on May 23, the CAAA and Mission Focused solutions would like Committee members to receive and read letters from adoptive families in plenty of time (preferably by TODAY May 19, 2014 if you are able).
