This looks interesting. I need to find out more before I swallow the critics comments, but it made me wonder how much the grassland environment in Norther China is manmade. In much of Wales, the mountains are bare of trees, but were once forests; cut down to build Britains navies and to fuel the industrial revolution. But the reason the trees havent grown back in the subsequent centuries is that sheep are grazed there, and they eat every tree sprout except those that manage to germinate in cliff-face crevices inaccessible to 4-legged herbivores. (There are also experimental fenced areas where forest has naturally recovered.) Could some similar mechanism have created the grassy plains of northern China, or was it always like that there? newscientist/article/mg22429994.900-great-wall-of-trees-keeps-chinas-deserts-at-bay.html#.VI_Qw8ZriBI
