This makes me wanna cry really bad :( BREAKING STORY by Tom Knudson of the Sacramento Bee Wildlife Services shoots lactating female caught in trap on Flat Top Ranch in Central Idaho. Wildlife Services made claims to the media that female was NOT lactating. BUT, thanks to a state records request by Lynne Stone, documents show female WAS lactating, directly contradicting the claims of Wildlife Services, the agency that shot the wolf. See where it clearly says, "lactating" on the document. This means her pups were not yet weaned and most likely starved. She was killed because of attacks on livestock while Flat Top Ranch was engaging in "range lambing." This method of lambing leaves pregnant ewes out on the landscape day and night to give birth to their lambs spread over a large area, frequently on public lands. This method is well known to attract carnivores. Other much more secure methods are available but only some ranches such as Flat Top choose this method citing economic reasons recognizing the inherent risk to their animals. Should wolves, should lactating female wolves be killed because they were drawn in by a method known to attract carnivores and scavengers? In cases like this, federal money is used to kill the wolves and pay the rancher. We all pay for it to happen. As she stood there in a trap, the government agent had a choice whether to free her so she could return to her pups or pull the trigger.
