This might come across as ranty but it is not meant to be. This is an honest question & a curiosity. My preteen niece likes reading books that have female protagonists as the main characters who are going on adventures. So I thought I would get her a couple books for Xmas. Only to discover there are very few books that fit what I thought was a simple concept. Males were usually the protagonists and even when it was a book where there was a woman adventure who was usually part of a mostly male team the cover art had the men all looking heroic & ready for action & the women all looking unsure, worried or scared even if they are holding a sword or gun. Yet the men who are holding the same items look supremely confident & ready for action. Is this really the message we want to be providing for our societies young girls. I dont want my niece to grow up thinking she cant be an adventurer, that she cant push boundaries and strive for bigger & better things. Im quite frankly offended at the lack of positive strong females in the K-12 reading options. I have read & watched multiple reviews, recommendations, & highlights sites only to find that most of the adventure books on the market have a male protagonist & if there is a female of any sort she is usually used as a victim who needs saving. :( ..... I know this was TL:DR fodder but if you made it to the end do you have any good recommendations for books with strong female adventures (regardless of genre) that are focused at the 8-12 age range?
