This month we’ve highlighted a few different articles trumpeting the positive effects of mindfulness training. We thought it would only be right to give equal time to the opposition – for example, a recent study from Georgetown University’s Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery. The study in question demonstrates that individuals who are most attentive to the present moment display a tendency to score lower marks when it come to automatic learning, which is how the brain absorbs repeating patterns. So while mindfulness may prevent the establishment of bad habits, it could also threaten one’s ability to establish good habits as well. What do you think? Have you ever found mindfulness to get in the way of forming positive habits? If this study were to gain traction, would it change the way you conceive of mindfulness practice as a whole?
