This one is about me: As many of you know, after the war and we found out that my father was alive and working in New York for Notraship (Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission. Mail started arriving. My mother finagled a job as a waitress on a bulk cargo carrier where my uncle was a bos,n leaving from Antwerp for New York. We flew to Belgium and had a really grand crossing. I knew my father immediately when I saw him on the dock and it was love at first sight. He had an apartment on 94th St. in Bay ridge in Brooklyn (at that time known as Little Norway and I had to go to school. PS something or other. But I made one friend, from Belgium, a girl who was seriously Catholic. Walking to school we had to cross the street passing a Protestant Church, stop in at the Catholic Church to kiss the foot of Jesus (I never said so, but I thought it looked like a wart on his toe) Got lost in the apartment house because all the doors looked alike. Discovered roller skates (the kind with a skate key) but no money to buy them. Oddly, I knew when my father got paid. While skipping rope outside just before payday, hollered up so everyone could hear it Pappa, can I get roller skates next payday? I did and got pretty good at it. The disappointment came when we moved back to Norway and I found out that they dont work well on cobble stones. They also had graphite wheels, that eventually wore square. Also learned to speak English....PS whatever was a gloomy place, got my first dress not homemade, my first banana split (an orgasmic experience)...more later.
