This original composition, written for solo timpani, was the fourth piece on my Senior Percussion Recital at the University of Idaho. The Machine was written in two days, and is sort of a minimalistic piece. (Meaning, I state a musical phrase, develop it through layering and sound experimenting, and proceed to explore variations of the melody and rhythms originally stated. The focus is more on the variations of the theme, rather than the theme itself). Written in the middle of the night (like much of my folk music), I was really attempting to illustrate the darker aspects of my personality: intermittent insomnia, dependence on routine, and slight obsessive tendencies. Interestingly, I was applying these traits directly to the actual writing process of the piece...
