This painting is part of the Disappearing Darwin Series - a series celebrating the heritage of the city of Darwin and its environs. Port Darwin 1887.The port was first used for commercial shipping in 1869 when George Goyder surveyed Port Darwin. Permanent (stone) structures were erected throughout the town during the 1880s. Top left is Government House, which was the first public building and was constructed in 1871. In the middle of the escarpment was the Police Station and Court House, now used as office accommodation for the Administrator. Nestled in the gully below that is Knights Folly, a Moorish-style mansion built by Government Architect (and later Administrator) JG Knight in 1884. (demolished by fire in 1933) Their are several more paintings in the series and will gladly put them up if any interest is show.
