This past weekend was the Lake Placid Ironman event. I was able to volunteer last year with my good friend, Jill Steffen, and we were witness to so much greatness! I wasnt able to go this year, but I did follow online the progress of some of my friends that took on the challenge of training and competing in this epic triathlon. I am so impressed and inspired by their commitment and dedication. Wow, 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles on the bike, and 26.2 miles running. Im not sure it thats crazy, or super cool! My sprint tri is this Sunday, as in....4 days from now. Ive been training for almost 4 weeks, not the length of time Id recommend to a newbie...but there was that canal thing ;) Getting in the pool and swimming laps for the first time in my life was hard for me. I was scared. I never liked swimming, even as a child, and actually have been rather afraid of open water. But I wanted to do this. I wanted to look at a training plan and have that feeling I had when training for my first marathon. Maybe you know the feeling Im talking about: where you can hardly breathe...excited, yet scared...that wonderment of can I do this? cause if I can....thatd be pretty cool! I havent had that feeling in a long time...I sure have it now! So this morning I went in for my last swim before the race. I did 750 yards and it took me 23 minutes. Yes I know, that is quite slow and Ill probably be the last one out of the lake on Sunday, but my first 750 yard swim 4 weeks ago took me over 15 minutes longer. So Im ok with that. When I got home, I hopped on Carmella. Well, that sounds terrible.... let me explain... Carmella is the bike Im using. A nice road bike on loan from my good friend Emily. And Andy Frank gave her a nice tune up and got her ready for me. So I had time for 6 miles this morning. That would be the only 6 miles Ive ridden on this bike as my training has been on my big clunker. I am excited about Sunday. Im looking forward to this event, something Ive never done before. Thank you for letting me share my thoughts over the last month with you. And for the advice youve given me! Funny, after loosening the goggles, my raccoon eyes werent nearly as bad, and putting the swim cap on in the water made a HUGE difference:) Thanks! Have a super awesome day and Happy Running!!!
