This photo appeared with this newspaper article in Milan Leader, 1938. “Crooked Tree” Gets New Lease Through Gifts The plea to save the “Crooked Tree” at the corner of Dexter and County streets was met with enthusiasm by the people of Milan and so the old landmark that has grown famous will be with us many years to come. Mrs. Willis Culver, chairman of a committee in charge of the work, announced last week that the last dollar in the campaign had been raised and the repairs to the tree’s heart had been finished. Before Harry Dicken, Jr., left for Isle Royal for work with the forestry department he explained the work he had done. The heart of the tree was eaten by decay that was seriously endangering its life. The decayed wood was carefully scraped away and the resulting cavity was filled with cement which was covered with a waterproof material to guard against further decay. The cement heart will protect against any strong wind that might blow the tree from its moorings and yet leave the way open for life-giving sap to flow into its foliage and branches. Thanks were given to those who graciously made contributions and a list of these follows: Socony Vacuum Oil company, $40; Village of Milan, $10; Rotary Club, $5; Chamber of Commerce, $5; Ideal Furnace Company, $5; Miss Anna Delaforce $1; Mrs. Bert Dolman, $1 and Harry Dicken, Jr., $1. And so the “Wishing Tree” will go on flourishing while present and future life flows around and under its spreading branches; there it can stand and dream the years away and smile down on its friends and offer them tranquility by its own example.
