This photo was submitted to the Tiskilwa paper in the early eighties. The quilt these Mennonite ladies are working on is what I pieced together. I started this quilt after I graduated from high school in 78. Most kids went off to college or found jobs. At that time my mom was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer. I was the youngest of seven kids and I couldnt bear to leave my folks under these conditions... so I stayed home to care for mom. I began a project as a hobby to help cope with dealing what I had to face everyday with a sick parent. My dad who always used reverse psychology on me said Id never finish it and I wanted to prove him wrong. I had no problem piecing the top on and adding batting, etc but I didnt know how to quilt the thing. This is where these sweet ladies came to the rescue. My friend Cindys mom recommended I contact Mrs. Kauffman from the Tiskilwa Mennonite church. I have very fond memories quilting writhe these ladies and the others not in the picture. I never got to tell my dad see I told you I could finish it because he died of a fatal heart attack in Tiskilwa then four months later my Mom succumbed to cancer. I eventually moved away without ever telling the Menonite ladies thank you and how much their kindness meant to me during a hard time in my life.
