This pre-war actor and Philippine film director would become the one of the most influential filmmakers in Singapore and Malaysia in the 1950s and 1960s, before moving to Puerto Rico and ultimately the United States. He was also a painter. His father was one of the countrys most famous classical composers (a.k.a., the Waltz King of the Philippines), and his mother belonged to a family of well-known actors of the old Teatro Español. One of his nephews was a 2-sport varsity college athlete at Ateneo de Manila in basketball and in football (where he was team captain) -- he was an Ateneo Sports Hall of Fame Awardee and played for the Philippines national football team at the 2nd Asian Games (1954).
