This regal home that stands on North 6 St. in Ft. Smith is widely recognized as the William H. H. Clayton House. Built around 1850, it was taken over by the Union Army during the civil war while they controlled Ft. Smith and it was used as officers quarters. After the civil war ended, William H. H. Clayton, who served in the Union Army up north, moved to Arkansas where he became an attorney. He was appointed as prosecuting attorney to the court presided over by Judge Isaac C. Parker. This home has been on the National Register for many years and is a special place on the tour of the Belle Grove Historic District.
