This segment by Lawrence ODonnell aired just a few days after Sandy hit. Perhaps never before was our community shown in such a positive light nationally. The great things said about us two years ago were accurate. They remain true today. Yes, we are a community with challenges, like just about every other town in this country. But we have no monopoly on hate or ignorance or intolerance. And while it remains time for Staten Islanders to express their emotions, Ive already grown weary of the self-righteous diatribes against our community made by non-Staten Islanders. Sorry folks, too many of you are coming across as if you have been waiting a long while to negatively characterize us again and you almost sound gleeful in raging against us. We have work to do, no doubt. But so does the place you come from. You do you, and we will do us. And make no mistake, Staten Island, we do need to do some work. I know many community leaders, clergy, elected officials, small business owners and Island residents who are committed to working in a multitude of ways to improve as a community. Their voices will get us to where we want to be, not anyone elses.
