This short 3 minute action continues to gain attention bringing the issue of speciesism and the story of Snow and other victims like her to even those who would otherwise ignore the issue. Some frequent criticisms of direct action as a means to promote animal rights are that its too confrontational; That attacking customers is counterproductive and that yelling in peoples faces will never get them to go vegan. These very tactics that were used by activists in the form of sit-ins during the Civil Rights movement are what compelled those that were against or neutral on the subject to confront the issue that theyve so long refused to see. Yet, with a bit over a year and no funds to promote their actions, Direct Action Everywhere has stormed into the Animal Rights scene receiving considerable recognition and press coverage from some of the biggest media outlets. This video from my friend and colleague, Kelly Atlas, has gone viral and has been spread by significant TV figures, such as the conservative political pundit, Glenn Beck as well as various newspapers from around the world. Whether positive or negative criticisms are received, one thing is for certain: Its sparking a conversation. It all started with a small group of animal rights activists that believed in one basic message, complete liberation for all animals. Now, with over 40 different cities in 15 different countries, Direct Action Everywhere is expanding and becoming a real force to be reckoned with in the Animal Rights Movement. How strong figures in the animal rights movement like Gary Francione and Bob Linden can see this as a catastrophe for the movement is beyond my understanding. But Im hoping these disruptions compel and inspire others to speak up for the animals, speak up against speciesism and strive to get that animal liberation message out there.
