This song has always had great impact on me. Sometimes motivating me to get involved, sometimes to remind me why Im involved, sometimes to calm the fear when I realize how deeply involved in the survival of our people I am. I, too, am wondering how many have gone before, and tell me how many more, must be lost to the Indian wars. So many of our people lost to this war, some through death, some assimilation, some just forgot. Being Indian or activist isnt about always being at every function, it doesn’t mean having long flowing black hair or 50 eagle feathers, it isnt having a pipe or language or sweating 3.2 times a month. And remember to honor and lift up those allies who stood by us and paid the price along with us, freely sharing their gifts of music, song, prayer, strength. Being a warrior isnt proven on one battlefield or another. It it being everyday, no matter if you got long braids or no hair, dark brown or blonde freckles, senator or homeless. It is walking your talk in the best way you can whenever you can and when you cant, honor yourself anyway. And please, lets remember with kindness these warriors who tread that road before us.
