This song written by Sam Cooke in the sixties expresses one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. It is the human collective yearning response to living with various long time injustice and denials of basic and equal privileges among ourselves. From the cries of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt to those 2500 years later enslaved in America to the more present breaking into consciousness inequalities for women, gays , the working poor, the sliding away middle class, the hard working immigrant and the appeals of the Arab Spring; this perennial call echoes through all of history. Is it not always the sign of a higher human consciousness who are able to hear it and join it at whatever level possible that determines the depth of character our species in any age? What kind of persons must we be to more quickly hear this plea in its new yet real forms and be able to say, "There it is again, we must not close our ears or our hearts like our forebears often did before. We must listen better." youtube/watch?v=NLC5J8A8I9c&feature=endscreen&NR=1
