This summer has been quite busy for us here at Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley. With the end of our fiscal year on June 30, and closing on 8 houses during the month of June, we’ve had many projects taking place with multiple groups/teams filling our build days. Our summer is starting to lighten up in regards to groups of volunteers, so just in time for the best weather of the year, we have plenty of openings for individual volunteers to work on our projects!! Please consider coming out to volunteer with us during the month of August. We have two more houses we’re looking to close on this month, and we cannot do it without your help!! Meet the families that will be moving in to these houses: 315 Jewett Street, Elgin Elgin resident and Marine Corps veteran Roberto is the family partner for this house located in the South West Area Neighborhood (SWAN District) of Elgin. Robertos family includes his 10 year old twin boys, and his 20 year old brother. Roberto enlisted in the Marine Corps his senior year at Elgin High School and traveled to the recruiting depot in San Diego. After boot camp, Roberto attended the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, California. Robertos service took him to places such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Australia. He was honorably discharged in 1999 as a Lance Corporal with the National Defense and Armed Forces Expeditionary medals. After years away from home, he returned with his two children, twin boys, to put down roots in the community where he grew up. He was approved for a Habitat for Humanity house and matched with a property in his hometown of Elgin. Roberto has been actively completing his sweat equity and is looking forward to moving at the beginning of August so that his boys can start school in District U-46 on Monday, August 18. 1190 Manito Trail, Algonquin Jena is the mother of 3-year-old Anabelle and the Development Director of a homeless shelter in Palatine. Jena – who currently lives in a small, second-story apartment in an older building in Algonquin – has greatly enjoyed the quick transformation of this home and is very grateful to be part of the Habitat program. Jena works with volunteers everyday who actively dedicate their time to helping those less fortunate than themselves, and she is honored and appreciative that so many people are willing to do the same for her. With the help of volunteers like you, Jena will be moving into her new home at the end of August.
