This touches on a very interesting observation that I have also noticed during my travels. Ive had people who literally live in mud huts and struggle for food every day offer me half their orange or banana without even thinking about it, despite it probably being the only thing they will eat that day. People who eat meat maybe once or twice a year, kill one of their few chickens when I am a guest in their home and give me the biggest piece at dinner. Yet in the west, giving is not normal for us. We hold onto every dollar and belonging and do not give it up unless we get something in return. Despite earning thousands of dollars a week, most in the modern world cannot even spare $5 or $10 for charity. Why is this? My best guess is that people who grow up in poverty do not place a high value on material possessions, and instead, their values gravitate towards community and friendship. It seems, as we get wealthier, we get greedier too. Something to think about. ow.ly/E2hvj
