This was written about my great great great grandfather, John Leon Weeks This was written by Judge G. W. Storter and appeared in the Naples News Thursday, August 18, 1927 Early Settlers Founded City of Everglades about 1868 Captain Allen found a lone settler living at the mouth of the river by the name of John Weeks, better known as old John. He had been a refugee to Key West at the time of the Civil War, like many others who did not wish to fight in the war of secession, but finally had to leave and go over to the Yankees side, they occupied Key West for a long period during the civil war. As a result he was sent to Everglades because the refugees had become so numerous at Key West that they became a burden upon the city and the commander sent some families out on the islands to help themselves, and raise vegetables for the Key West markets. Captain John Weeks had been placed on Cape Sable originally, but he did not remain there long. Old John was a veteran of the Mexican War, and a short time after the Civil War had ceased applied for a pension, which came three days after his death. It was said of him that he settled all the places from Crawfords Key near Naples to Cape Sable.
