This week Im going to focus on Magnesium (or Mg for short). Mg - TopicsExpress

This week Im going to focus on Magnesium (or Mg for short). Mg is a cation (which is an ion with a positive charge) that is involved in almost every major process which occurs in the body and is a cofactor in around 350 enzymatic reactions. Around 60% of the Mg in your body is stored in the bones with only 25% of Mg being stored in your muscle tissue and is associated with structural components of the tiny organs which make up the inside of our cells, called organelles (what a cute name!) Every second of every day your body is utilising Mg in numerous ways and its importance in regards to health is vital. Mg is involved in energy production, cell division (which is how we grow!), helps maintain a supply of synthesising agents of RNA and DNA, regulates Potassium (otherwise known as K) in heart cells regulating heart beat and blood pressure, metabolising/activating vitamin D (which has functions in immunity and will be discussed another time), synthesising parathyroid hormone (which helps regulate how much calcium is released from bones into the blood stream) and in the formation of hard tooth enamel preventing decay. This is barely grasping the vast and wide reaching uses of Mgs functions in the body but you are getting the concept of how versatile this mineral is inside of us. Mg deficiency can be overlooked because it does perform so many functions inside our bodies. Increasing Mg rich foods or taking a supplement can help you with: maintaining energy levels -assisting in relaxation and sleep -helping maintain health of heart and blood vessels (which is pretty important for life!) -helping with hypertension by exhibiting a calcium blocking effect (if this interests you discuss this with your Naturopath or General Practitioner prior to purchasing a supplement) -diabetes- again I stress, if this interests you please seek professional medical advice prior to starting any supplementation! -constipation Mg can be found in many foods which we consume as part of our every day diet as can be seen from the pictures provided from wonderful websites. Mg can also be taken as a supplement for times when we need extra support or may be deficient, it is recommended though that you read the paragraph below before purchasing anything. In regards to Mg supplements I would recommend discussing this with a Naturopath or Nutritionist as every person is unique and presents with different reasons for wanting to supplement. For me to recommend one or two products when there is such a vast application range would be a disservice to you. Seek professional advice as there are literally thousands of Mg products on the shelves out there and you want the one best suited to you and your needs!! Im going to share some recipes with Mg rich food with you later in the week....I hope you enjoy them!! Feel free to make your own Mg meal and share it with me on here....I would love that!! Thank you and I hope you enjoyed the Mg post :) I look forward to sharing more with you....Much love xxx NOTE: this information does not replace medical advice or treatment. We do not take responsibility for any outcomes which occur as a result of this post. Please seek medical or Naturopathic advice before starting any new supplementations, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.
