This week began like a dream: Its my birthday and I get a call from one of my biggest musical heroes, Joshua Redman. The airline damaged his horn en route to LA. He needs to use mine. Can I make it to the club in time for him sound check with my saxophone? [My saxophone, btw, has a lot to do with Josh. 20 years ago, obsessed with his music, I took his album to a local music store to find out what kind of sax he held in the cover photo. Then I made a pilgrimage to NYC to get one like it.] So I make it to the club in time. My horn will do the job. Josh insists I sit in each set (while he uses a second horn I brought). We play the Sonny Rollins/John Coltrane classic blues, “Tenor Madness”. We play a tune Josh recorded years ago, with Joe Lovano, on one of my favorite albums, Tenor Legacy. At the end of the night, a repair man in the audience fixes Josh’s horn. But we’re having such a blast we continue the party the following night up the coast at the Lobero Theatre. This time we close with Josh’s energetic arrangement of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean”. All this backed by the masterful rhythm section of Reuben Rogers and Gregory Hutchinson. What?! If not for the pictures I would be certain this was a dream.
