This week in Springfield, I have the great opportunity to serve my fellow Realtors and all the residents of Illinois. I serve on 5 committees for IAR, 4 of which are meeting this week while over 500 Realtors lobby for a better understanding and more cooperative spirit among our legislators concerning private property and home-ownership rights. It is a very busy time w/ the spring market finally coming around and not exactly easy to fit even important agenda items into the schedule. From the housing conference yesterday, todays Educ Wrkg Grp, tomorrows ProDevMig, ProStandards and Public Policy meetings and those Im not even an integral part of this week- I want to say thanks to each Realtor committee member from the Illinois Association. For making each step, voice and raised hand count when lobbying for the rights of our clients and customers and the way we get to do business on their behalf. What we do here matters, especially this week, not everyone gets that.. I know.. I have folks asking all the time Why do you do volunteer for this stuff?? (and yes- all committee members are volunteers) Well, If we dont do it.. Who Will? The average client - buyer or seller- really has no idea that their local Realtor may support an educational agenda or raise funds thru RPAC- (Realtor Political Action Committee) so that our state officials can really get the whys, wheres and hows of home-ownership- so that when a bill comes into play, whether in committee or full floor of the house or senate, our lobbyist deciphers it, IAR sends out a call to action - letting Realtors all across the state be more fully aware of what some well meaning but perhaps totally uninformed or misinformed member of the public may be putting forth- attaching itself to an already hard tasked state or county assessment portfolio. Some are necessary of course- but even many of those may be better funded in other ways- thru options other than real estate tax burdens. Not every restriction put forth really makes good sense for an entire community. Not every problem has to have a program attached that has to be funded thru real estate taxes. Sometimes putting away the hammer and using the flyswatter works just fine thank you. Thats part- but definitely not all- of what this week is about in Springfield. So tomorrow- I head back- to meetings, because theyre important. Special thanks to the folks from the Brinkoetter office who lobbied today. I love that youre involved and that you get it! For your time, for your voice, for your raised hands, all the work already done and whats left to do... Thank you.
