This week on #FrankstonFaces we have a very talented 19 year old, Chelsey Molloy. Chelsey has lived in Frankston for most of her life. She began school at Frankston Heights Primary school, and last year finished VCE at Frankston High School. Through most of her secondary school years, she thought she was going to be a scientist and travel into space as an astronaut! The one thing she enjoyed more than this was playing and rehearsing in the Frankston High School Senior Big Band. During year 11 she asked her music teachers if it were possible to be able to play in a Big Band environment every day. Leon de Bruin advised that it was highly unlikely that she could make a living out of purely playing in a Big Band, however there was a place in South Australia where she could audition to study with 18 other like-minded students from around the country in a Big Band for 1 year. In Mt. Gambier SA there is a Generations in Jazz Festival and 1 of their program streams running from the festival is the Big Band Academy. Chelsey was selected to attend this Academy. She says the Academy is the most amazing opportunity, which has been given to me by the famous Graeme Lyall (AM) who rehearses us for Big Band for ninety minutes, 5 days a week. In between these rehearsals are classes specifically designed to enhance our musical knowledge and playing ability, so that we can face the world of work in music ahead of us with the confidence required to be successful. There are a lot of perks to being in the Academy. We get to work with Graeme Lyall, we dramatically improve our dexterity and musical aptitude, and we get workshops with wonderful musicians from around the world. After performing in front of a crowd of 6,000 people for the GIJ Festival, we toured with the Big Phat Band to Brisbane and Sydney. Another highlight of the year is being able to work with two of James Morrison’s sons who joined the course this year. James also comes to visit us in Mt. Gambier to give us some inspirational masterclasses as well. Chelsey was one of the featured singers and wowed the crowd at our LongLazyLunch in 2013.
