This weekend over 20 bags of rubbish were collected over a 2 km stretch of roadside in the Rathmore area. This included 16 bags alone along 500m of roadside. Sadly this is not a once off event. Dozens of bags of rubbish were filled the weekend before Christmas and rubbish is constantly being picked up all around the area. Its time to say thank you to the people who over and over give up their time to clean up our area. They climb ditches, use their pitch forks to pull bags of dumped household waste out of trees and drains, and pick up the rubbish that we all see. They stop Rathmore from becoming a dirty old town. They care about Rathmore and give their time up so that Rathmore can be a great town, vibrant and alive with colour. Who dumps their waste around Rathmore? It could be the person in front of you in the queue, buying a can or a bottle to drink. Or the person buying that snack box or carton of chips at the take away. Or the person who was standing outside having the last cigarette out of the pack. Sometimes it is somebody who keeps their own house clean and tidy, changing their childrens nappies, popping them in their bin bag and then throwing the bag out of their car. We need more people to clean, more people to help and less tolerance of anyone who thinks its ok to roll down a window and throw out their rubbish. We will post details here of the next clean up date. Please come along. I can guarantee you that once you have picked up the first packet of crisps with the grabber tool, you will see the place brighten up a little. Please note: Leaving or throwing litter in a public place is an offence which can be subject to an “on the spot” fine of €150 and a maximum fine of €3,000. If you are driving and somebody in your vehicle throws rubbish, you may also be fined for their behaviour.
