This weekend was certainly well spent: a brief visit with my parents; a celebration of the short but by all means impactful life of Mrs. Melinda Sousa; and an early birthday celebration of the best friend Theresa. When I stepped off of the plane at LAX, the first face I saw was that of none other than Anne Lamott. She was sitting next to her husband, just eating a bite of oatmeal before her flight. It took me a minute to gather myself enough to get her autograph, but she kindly signed her name and a heart in my little notebook. As I walked away staring at her signature, feeling like a little girl who just met her favorite Disney Princess at a shopping mall, I couldnt help but think why the heck didnt I ask for a picture? Naturally, I turned around, walked right back up to Anne and her husband, and asked if I could have a picture. Her husband took three--to ensure that this fangirl wouldnt return for another. I chatted with her for a moment, and told her how much it meant to me to see her just after the passing of the woman who first introduced me to Annes writings, and a little exerpt called The Shitty First Draft. Mrs. Melinda Sousa had a knack for finding books and authors who were real, relateable, and brilliant; just like herself. It seemed oddly appropriate to seal the weekends remembrance with Annes friendly face. Mrs. Sousa will forever be in my heart, and I can only hope to develop her eye for brilliant authors. Never take your teachers for granted. They will have a lifelong impact if you let them.
