This winter, Shiloh National Military Park is preparing for a control burn early winter through late spring. On Wednesday, December 17th, park staff, in cooperation with the Natchez Trace Fire Management Team, constructed fire breaks in two of its burn units, East Branch and Middle Branch. Fire breaks are essential for containment and inhibits fire to burn only where it is designated. Fire is a management tool used in many national park units to promote a healthier ecosystem, reduce hazard fuels (ex. fallen dead trees and woody debris), reduce the number of exotic, or non-native plants, initiate nutrient recycling for healthy soil conditions. Within cultural parks (such as Shiloh), controlled fire restores, preserves, and maintains the historic landscape of the battlefield.
