There are times when any attempt at affective meditation or colloquy is impossible, and when habitual recollection degenerates into acts or even ceases altogether. At such times, the Office objectively said, recited even with boredom, constitutes necessary obedience: a satisfying discipline upon which the weary soul may rest. All thoughts, affections, and devotion may be thrust upon the Church itself; the arid soul has praised God, it is truly knit with Christ, lack of fervor notwithstanding. The Office is our daily gift to God, through Christ, and the value of a gift lies in its acceptibility to the recipient, not in its effect on the donor. (English Spirituality, XX.6)
